whats other peoples experiences of having a boar castrated? Im thinking of getting Douglas done - he really hates being on his own and I know he would be much happier living with others but obviously that enails problems! He is nearly 1 yr old, If he was castrated he could live with 2 of the girls. I would obviously take him to a very experienced vet (rec by others) but I still have a lot of worries. Any advice greatly rec

We have had a 100% successful Castration with Victor.
Anesthesia is Isoflurin or similar gas type. The operation lasts about 10 - 15 minutes. The pigs are up and wobbling about minutes after the operation. You should get antibiotics and a painkiller when you collect you boar.
Surgical glue is often used now, so no stitches to worry about.
Keep the boar away from the sows for 4 - 5 weeks

Thanks for that Sue, it would be Victor I would take him to, knowing all has been well with your experiences gives me hope - I think Iwill def get him done, although he is right next to his brother with only a mesh divider hes so much better in with others he puts on weight and is more content, since I took Tuppence away from him hes just been hyper and nervy and very frustrated I think!

Is there any herbal or aromatherapy I can use on Douglas to calm him down a bit? I did an aromatherapy course for horses but not sure if the same remadies apply

thanks for that sue - I do have some lavender, jasmine, ylang ylang, sandelwood and chamomile essentail oils so will give them a try individually to see what he likes or not - I guess its the same principles we used with the horses, let them sniff it and if they need it they will like it but if they dont like the smell then dont use it on them - Im willing to try anything for him coz I want him to be happy and will do the castration only if last resort for him
