As usual, same as on other forums, this is the place for the HG's medical stuff! Too much to keep breaking into individual sections.
The latest I think you guys heard was a few months ago. So to catch up:
A week ago Tuppy and Lottie went to the CCT.
Tuppy dropped lots of weight in a matter of days, down to 1lb 4oz (600g). Very quick. Dribbling a storm. She had overgrown molars trapping her tongue down.
Lottie had a swollen leg with a scab on. Diagnosed as degenerative joint disease, a virus that affects the joints of elderly pigs. She can't walk due to the pain and swelling, and has little muscle in her good leg, so she has been dragging herself round for the past week. Awful to see but she is very happy like that. Lots of pus squeezed out. She's on Rimadyl, last two doses today, but has had to come off the thyroid meds for the 8 days she's been on the Rimadyl. Can't mix other meds with Neo-Mercazole. The thyroid side is going well, her belly has 'deflated' but she's still got little hair, but Vedra was very pleased with her progress.
The latest news...
Tuppy is doing pretty well. She's on Daktarin for the next week as she is still dribbling. I ran out and so haven't been giving her any for a few days, but luckily managed to get a tube yesterday so we're back on course. I have been building the amount I've been syringing her, and we are now up to 20ml three times a day. She isn't gaining much weight, but she is holding what little she has gained. She's holding an ounce more - 1lb 5oz - but we can get her up to 1lb 6oz after feedings. I will add a fourth feeding to increase the total daily to 80ml, which should set her on course to plumping up a little. A pig who weighs 1kg should have 60-70ml so really she should be getting over 100ml to help her put on weight.
The first couple of days syringe-feeding she was reluctant, but if I get the timings right (4-6 hours between feedings) she is eager to take the feeding. She will now take 20ml in 5-10 minutes, she mouths the syringe and eats from it like she drinks from a water bottle. I am having to put Bepanthen next to her mouth as she has a very sore patch, likely from the constant dribbling.
When she hears me mixing the Nutripowder up, she climbs up onto my knee and tries to pull the bowl out of my hands. She's taken to biting the bars when she's in the cage and I'm preparing her feed.
She has perked up immeasurably since last night. Biting the bars, trying to eat, sitting in the hay and the food bowls, wandering round the room.
Lottie is also doing well. The swelling has not eased any further, she is on her last doses of Rimadyl today. She can stand and walk a little but still will not put her swollen leg down, so her 'good' leg can't hold her up for long. She has lain low for a few days but has picked up again and is dragging herself around more.
