A few weeks ago we see a massive rat in the garden around the guinea pigs cages. We put a trap out side but didn't catch anything or see anything else. Then for some strange reason one guinea pig died. We could put anything to it. The next week another died we still could put anything to it. Then another 2 days pasted and another died still no reason. Then another and another. The next morning we were in the kitchen and we see a mouse run up the fridge wire and across the bench to the cooker. We put about 4-5 mouse traps down and 1 rat trap. We then found that the mice had bitten thought the cages and were going in and out of them for food. We had to get rid of the guinea pigs as fast as we could to save any more from dying. Steve and sue kindly offered to look after them till we got the problem sorted. We have it all under control now. I am missing them so much i hope to get them back soon.

Sorry to hear about your losses. Rats and mice can carry some diseases that can affect cavies, Hopefully now they have gone they won't be back. You will need to disinfect you pens and equipment well using a good animal disinfectant such as virkon. let them stand empty through the cold weather.

Im sorry to hear about your guinea pigs, I did not realise how dangerous mice were to guinea pigs until i joined GPW. I have had a few in my shed at times but now know i have to get rid them. What i do have in my shed at the moment is a Degu and i just cant catch this one yet. When i spotted this fellow my hit the floor.

Have you got some sort of humaine trap to catch the Degu ?
Guinea pigs and degus probably don't mix if they are in the same pen. I like degus, we had a pair years ago. They have an interesting range of noises.

Well i need to get a better trap, On saturday we are emptying the shed completly with the hope of finding the Degu. I know its been in the shed for a few weeks, but it was one of these things were i thought i saw something but wasn't so sure untill the other day. Its not as easy as the mice to catch. My kids want to keep the Degu if we can catch it.
